When it may be needed
- Diabetic retinopathy that needs treatment
- A retinal tear
- Dr. Meera has advised laser for another retina problem
How we treat it
Laser around a retinal tear makes a scar that lowers the risk of a detachment. In diabetic retinopathy, laser lowers the risk from abnormal blood vessels. The aim is to protect the sight you have, not to bring back lost vision.
Dr. Meera explains which laser you need, how many sessions and what side effects to expect.

What to expect
Before laser
Drops widen the pupil and numb the eye. Bring someone to take you home.
During laser
A special contact lens helps focus the laser. You see bright flashes and may feel some discomfort.
Reviews
Come for every check, even if your vision seems the same. Some people need more than one session.
Common questions
Will everyone with diabetic retinopathy need laser?
No. It depends on the stage and where the disease is. Some people need only monitoring or another treatment.
Is this the laser that removes glasses?
No. Retina laser treats the back of the eye. Laser to reduce glasses is a different treatment.
Does laser remove floaters?
No. Laser for a tear does not remove floaters you already have. New flashes, more floaters or a curtain still need urgent care.
Are there side effects?
Depending on the laser, side vision or night vision can change. Dr. Meera explains this before treatment.
Can I stop follow-up after laser?
No. Reviews check the treated area and whether more care is needed.
