Common signs

  • The lower lid sags away from the eye
  • Watering with irritation
  • Redness or soreness along the lower lid

How we treat it

A lid can turn out because the tissues are loose, or because a scar pulls it down. A loose lid may need tightening; a scarred lid may need repair with extra tissue. Drops protect the eye surface in the meantime.

Common questions

Why does my eye water if it feels dry?

An outward-turning lid exposes the eye and moves the tear opening, so it can water and feel dry together.

Will a tear-duct operation fix ectropion?

Not by itself. Lid position and a blocked duct are different problems, though they can occur together.

Does every case need surgery right away?

No. It depends on the cause, your comfort and how well the eye is protected.

When should I get help quickly?

If the eye becomes painful or cannot close comfortably.

Is ectropion the same as entropion?

No. In ectropion the lid turns outward; in entropion it turns inward towards the eye. They need different repairs.
